The evening wind swirled once at the alley's entrance, then fell into a dead silence. The streetlamp on the corner flickered twice, casting fragmented shadows of the wires onto the asphalt.

A few glass beads in my palm felt heavy, stubbornly red, like a heart just pulled from the fire, not yet cooled.

Back then, we didn't know how to leave ourselves an escape route; we always felt our heartbeats were so loud that even the desk next to us could hear them. Pinning this splash of red to my wrist, for no other reason than to remember that reckless urge to burn the whole world to ashes and then run to one person.
